The Xtreme headed into the Christmas break earning a hard fought win against the visiting
Mitchell Mohawks this past Saturday night in Oakbank by a score of 5-4.
The Club welcomed back veteran forward Riley Thomsen to the lineup and it didn’t take long
for Riley to hit the score sheet earning his first of the year on a nifty backhand at 6:24 of the
opening frame. Brandon Melnick added to the lead just :38 seconds later putting the Home
Team up 2-0.
However, the Mohawks were determined to even the score and responded with a continued
barrage of shots towards starting goalie Quinn Walterson. Walterson turned aside each chance
and made some outstanding saves before Andrew Stropko finally put one past the veteran goalie
just over the midway point of the period. Mitchell continued to pressure the Xtreme and managed
to even the score with just over a minute remaing in the period to make the score 2-2 after one.
The second period continued to give fans plenty of action as both teams were trying to take
the lead, however, both net minders kept the score even through two heading into the final period.
Mitchell’s Seth Derksen put the visiting team up by one at 6:38 of the period beating Walterson on
a perfect shot breakaway. With the Xtreme on a Powerplay, Austin Asbury tied the score finding
the corner of the net which eluded starting goalie Liam Nevin. Both teams exchanged several good
scoring chances for the remainder of the period setting up a 3 on 3 overtime to decide a winner.
On this night, Santa did come early as Thomsen picked up his second of the night to earn the victory
and brought the Club back to .500 with an 7-7 record, good for fourth place in League Standings.
The Xtreme head out on the road for a matchup against the second place Comets this coming
Saturday night in Lorette. The Club is looking to continue and move up in the standings and will need
“all hands on deck” to earn a victory. Puck drop is at 8 pm at the Lorette Arena.
